Bissell Cleanview Helix Upright Vacuum Cleaner, Bagless, 82H1 Review

Bissell Cleanview Helix Upright Vacuum Cleaner, Bagless, 82H1

My 3 year old dirtdevil Vacuum cleaner gave up and I headed to the research room on Amazon to consider a replacement. After extensive research I zeroed in on this and Hoover 5507-900. Hoover was more expensive and did not have the tools and upholstery available on this Vacuum. I still had my doubts on Bissell hence I headed to Target to check the Vacuum myself. I was impressed with what I saw and I ordered this on Amazon.
Out of the box this Vacuum was very easy to assemble and quite user friendly. The motor was very powerful and it cleaned the dirt from the carpet with ease. It also had adjustable knob for power variation and had one for bare-floor surfaces. The dirt container was very easy to replace and the extra dusting brush with extension wand made hard to reach places very easy to clean. Whats more this vacuum worked like charm on my Vacuum storage bags. It removed the air out of the bag in 30 seconds flat.
I would definitely recommend this Vacuum cleaner who doesn't want to waste money on Hoover or even worst Dyson and still wants to keep clean.

Equipped with a 12 amp motor, this bagless upright vacuum cleaner provides maximum suction power for thoroughly cleaning the home from top to bottom. The unit effectively removes dust, dirt, and dry spills from both carpets and bare-floor surfaces, while its stretch hose and onboard attachments make above-floor cleaning a snap. Use the TurboBrush for upholstery and stairs, the crevice tool to access narrow spaces, the extension wand for extended reach, and the combination upholstery/dusting brush to clean tabletops, bookshelves, furniture, and more. Best of all, the unit's exclusive Helix dirt-separation system filters dirt and debris, protecting the motor and fan to ensure effective cleaning and long-lasting performance. The unit also offers a wide cleaning path, five adjustable-height options, dual-edge cleaning, a pre-motor filter, and a HEPA media post-motor filter. Its HEPA media filter traps over 99.9 percent of dust mites, pollens, and ragweed for cleaner, more breathable indoor air. Other highlights include an easy-empty dirt container, a soft bumper to protect furniture and baseboards from marking, a wide-beam headlight, a carrying handle, a stair-cleaning handle, a 27-foot power cord, and a quick-release cord wrap. Factory-Reconditioned Dyson DC 14 All Floors Upright Bagless Vacuum, Steel Yellow Review

I'm a long time Oreck XL user. I saw the deal for a refurb on passwird.com, so I grabbed one. I can't believe the volume of dirt this thing pulled out of my carpets after they had been cleaned with the Oreck. It is heavier than the Oreck, but the complaints that it's "too heavy" are exaggerated. I also have had no trouble using the attachments. The trick is to completely extend the flexible hose one time. This keeps it from wanting to drag the base unit after you. The overall industrial design is great although I find the placement of the power button a little quirky. Small price to pay. I'd buy it again.

Designed for all floor types, this Dyson upright vacuum cleaner features a motorized brushbar that can be turned on to remove dirt and pet hair from carpets, or turned off to protect rugs and delicate floors. Its advanced Root Cyclone technology ensures thorough, efficient cleaning with no clogging or loss of suction. Dyson proves no loss of suction using the IEC 60312 Cl 2.9 test standard. The unit's pre-motor filter removes particles down to 0.1 micron and can be washed, while its post-motor electrostatic filter, which never needs replacing, traps harmful carbon emissions from the motor.
The vacuum cleaner also comes equipped with a quick-draw Telescope reach; the wand releases and expands 17-feet at the touch of a button for stairs and high-reach cleaning. In addition, special edge-cleaning whiskers, angled to reach down between the skirting board and the floor, flick the dust from the edge into the airflow. The intake nozzles of the on-board tools direct high-velocity airflow down into the carpet pile, which provides two main advantages. More gets picked up because the directional force of the air agitates and dislodges dust, and it keeps airflow continuous even when vacuuming curtains or upholstery, preventing them from becoming stuck to the cleaner.

Thoughtfully designed, the unit's hygienic 5/7-gallon bin quickly empties without ever having to touch the dust--simply pull the trigger. The clear bin means no bags to buy, plus it allows for easily viewing the cleaning progress and gauging when it's full. Air expelled from the unit contains up to 150 times less mold and bacteria than common breathing air thanks to the vacuum's money-saving, lifetime HEPA filter. Furthermore, Dyson upright vacuums are the first and only vacuums certified asthma friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation. Other highlights include a 14-foot quick-draw hose, a wide channel for picking up larger pieces, auto carpet-height adjustment, a 35-2/5-foot cord, and an ergonomic design with a low handle that feels lighter to carry. The durably built vacuum cleaner measures 13-3/8 by 14 by 44-6/7 inches.

Editor's note: This is a reconditioned vacuum. Reconditioned generallymeans that the vacuum has been returned to the manufacturer, who returns theappliance to like-new condition. Some appliances may contain cosmetic blemishes.

I thought my old vacuum was doing a good job! Wrong! This Dyson Root Cyclone DC 14 is putting it to shame. I've used Bissel, Eureka, Dirt Devil & Kirby(the cadillac back in the day)& none come close to the cleaning ability of the Dyson. Spend the extra money, mine came with a five year warranty. You will not be dissapointed.

The Dyson DC14 All Floors is the base model for the DC14 vacuum line-up. Minor refinements and a more ergonomic handle make this a step above the DC07 family of vacuums. You won't find as many accessories versus the DC14 Low Reach, DC14 Animal or DC14 Full Gear, but these can always be purchased at a later date from our accessory section. This model does include 3 on-board tools: Dust Brush, Crevice Tool, and Furniture Tool.

My father bought me this vacuum for Christmas since my old hand me down one finally died. I opened the package and was worried that it wouldn't be very strong considering it's size... WOW. I have a cat and a dog and this thing picked up every single hair in the house. I was shocked to see how much dirt had been in my carpet all this time... and more shocked that this lightweight vac picked it all up. It's great for the stairs too because it's so light. I would recommend this to everyone.

Bissell FeatherWeight Vacuum, Bagless, 3106B Review

Bissell FeatherWeight Vacuum, Bagless, 3106B
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used this every day for years (I can't remember how many--but at least four years). I recently bought a new one only because I was afraid of scratching my floors due to the rollers not turning as well as they had before. I moved the old one down to my basement work area, and use the new one in the main living areas.
I have three dogs (previously four) and two house rabbits, all of whom go through times of heavy shedding. During those times I sometimes vacuum certain areas twice a day. There has never been any maintenance problem with this vacuum cleaner. The suction is strong enough for me to do my rag rugs and area rugs, and the rollers don't scratch my wood floors. It's easy on my back, conveniently converts to a hand vac, and is easy to take out and use at a moment's notice (no tedious unwinding of long cord).
One reviewer did write that this vacuum is hard to clean. I clean mine by dumping the bulk of the debris into the trash, then vacuuming the filter periodically with my Kenmore heavy-duty vacuum cleaner. The chamber holds a lot of dust, so even when my pets are heavily shedding, I don't empty it more than every 2 - 3 days.
If I only could have one vacuum cleaner, this would be it.

black lab = lots of shedding. This tool is amazing. My dog loves it when I use this on her. Unlike other tools I have tried, this doesn't tug on the fur. It is not painful to her. I was amazed at the amount of fur I had in my vacuum when finished. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone that has a shedding dog.

Pet owners will love the convenience of this handheld vacuum-cleaner attachment. Designed to make grooming both thorough and effortless, the unit connects to virtually any standard vacuum cleaner using the included universal adaptor, effectively removing shedding hair before it has a chance to settle on upholstery, carpeting, and rugs. The tool's flexible hose swivels to work around pets' legs and undercoat, while its unique shedding comb attracts and removes loose hairs, suctioning them away from the animal's coat. Be sure to avoid any sensitive areas and do not use the grooming tool on the pet's face, ears, or tail. Thoughtfully designed, the unit's soft handle provides a sturdy and comfortable grip, while its compact construction stores easily between uses. Effective even on thick-coated dogs, including Huskies, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds, the grooming tool measures approximately 13-4/5 by 4-4/5 by 4 inches.

Hoover Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum, Platinum Collection, UH70015 Review

Hoover Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum, Platinum Collection, UH70015
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We went through our second Dyson, and decided to switch just for the sake of doing so. Aside from the really high end European models, we opted for this new "prestige" line from Hoover, figuring it would be interesting to see what's the best they can do at a higher price point.
The machine itself looks really good, and when you turn it on, it's like starting a nice car, it almost purrs. The electronic start/stop and the electronic height adjustments are fabulous, very refined. And the machine seems to pick up everything in site.
Now, here are a few things to keep in mind, none of which are deal-breakers, but believe me, this thing is not perfect.
First and foremost, emptying the dirt chamber. At first we thought it was like most other bagless machines, you flick a lever and let the stuff fall in your garbage. But after about a week, we noticed the machine not picking up nearly as well, and we couldn't figure out a thing.
Then we looked carefully and saw that a huge collection of hair and debris had collected inside an inner cup, wrapped around the so-called cyclonic device.Once we got rid of that stuff, the vacuum was like new again. Still, it is hardly referred to in the manual, and it is rather a messy task.
Finally is the "dirt" indicator. It works on some sort of audio principle, sending out sounds which come back distored if they run in to dirt. I find that this works most of the time, but sometimes, it just stays red, and even after going over the area five times, it stays red.
I guess one could beef about the extension cord, why they didn't come up with some better way to unreel it and attach it to the machine. This is just like every other vacuum in that respect, but the cord seems longer.
I think I would buy it again, but the bag emptying procedure is sloppy and very unsophisticated. I'd be looking for machines that might do that job better.

iRobot 560 Roomba Vacuuming Robot, Black and Silver Review

iRobot 560 Roomba Vacuuming Robot, Black and Silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife and I decided to get one of these because our 8 month old son is about to start crawling. While we try and keep our floors clean, our beagle has other thoughts as she sheds all over the place. We went with the latest 560 model as it has just about everything we would want with a product like this. It works as advertised and we will definitley keep it but there are some areas that need improvement. Here is a quick breakdown of the pros and cons
Pros
1. Quieter than a standard vaccuum
2. Seems to learn the room dimensions quickly. The virtual walls and lighthouse feature are very nice.
3. Is "smart" enough to avoid getting tangled in our area rugs
4. Obviously easy to use as it is just a push of a button (or even better when you program it)
5. Can use everyday to keep the floors spotless
6. Have successfully used it on hard wood, vinyl, carpet and (accidently) concrete
7. Cleans under furniture which is otherwise a pain to do
8. Entertainment value - keeps the dog and baby interested for a while!Cons (or areas for improvement)
1. Fills up fast - Upon intital cleaning cycles, we had to empty it after about 10 minutes. Further usage proved better as the dust/dog hair was a lot less than before. I suppose this is a good thing as it is picking up dirt that I missed with the regualr vaccum.
2. No warning that it is full. This is the one area that would be a huge improvement. I feel like I need to interrupt it all the time to check if it is full. It would be great if it had some way to gauge how full it is.
3. Battery life - Not sure if I am getting the full specified battery life out of this as it seems to need a recharge after about an hour to an hour and a half (isn't it supposed to last longer?)
4. Automatic docking is iffy. Several times after it was done cleaning, it wandered around aimlessly looking for the docking station. The "lighthouse" feature didn't seem to help much. I ended up moving the dock to a more open area and hopefully that will work better. So for my first few days playing with this thing, it seems to do its job rather well with just a few annoyances that really do not affect its ability to clean. We plan on running it once a day to keep the dog hair and dust down to a minimum which will hopefully help our allegies.
*****UPDATE: 10/2/2007*******
Well, I've been using the Roomba now for a couple of weeks. I have it run every other day and here is what I think of it now
1. After letting it clean several times, I find I don't have to empty it every 10 minutes. I can now clean three rooms (about 900 square feet) without having to empty it.
2. My wife and I both agree that we seem to breathe better in the house now. Maybe it is due to less dust in the house (especially under the couches) or maybe its in our heads. Either way, we are breathing easier.
3. The self docking is now working great. I think my problems in the past were due to the brushes getting too dirty and requiring frequent cleaning (2 or 3 per run). Now, since the floors are cleaner, this has not been a problem and the Roomba finds its way home with no issues. I use the lighthouse settings to clean each room separately and then I guess they help Roomba find its home. Very nice!
4. Battery life doesn't seem to be a problem. I am getting the stated cleaning times per the manual and it seems to be enough to clean the 3 rooms.
5. The Roomba does require maintenance after each cleaning cycle. This requires emptying the dust bin, removing the brushes and filter to clean and, sometimes, cleaing the sensors that may have dust buildup. The entire process takes no more than 2 minutes and, even though it sounds like a pain, will hopefully keep Roomba problem free for a long time.I can find no fault with the Roomba right now. I might even consider purchasing a second and third one for the other parts of the house. I suppose I can move Roomba to the back rooms on the first floor or the upstairs but that would require too much effort on my part!
I am also considering the Scooba for my kitchen and bathrooms but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I might wait for the next generation to see if the bugs have been worked out of the current models. Also, if Irobot ever invented one, I would jump at the chance to get a robot that will shampoo carpets! Maybe we will see one soon.. ***Update 11/19/2007***
Ran into my first problem with Roomba this past week. The side brush snapped off and I was unable to put it back on. Knowing that these brushes need to be replaced from time to time I decided to order some replacements. Finding them on the Roomba site and ordering them was easy. Problem is that I was informed that they are on backorder for 4 to 6 weeks!! I e-mailed support and they responsed asking me for my mailing address, Roomba number and where I purchased it from. They stated they needed this so they could send me a replacement brush (a free replacement brush). I sent them the information with the hopes that they have some spare brushes ready to ship out but was then informed that it will take 4 to 6 weeks to get it out to me.
So in the end, I am stuck waiting for about $75 worth of brushes that I ordered as well as the free side brush they are sending me for at least 4 weeks. The good news is that Roomba still does her thing but the corners and edges of walls are somewhat neglected without the side brush.
I would still recommend Roomba to those who are thinking about it. Just be forwarned that "due to extremely high demand" replacement parts, including brushes, are currently on backorder for the 500 series.******Final Update 1/25/2008*******
Thought I'd give one final update now that I have been using Roomba for several months. I am still a believer that Roomba can keep your floors clean but it does take a bit more effort than some people will think. I will try my best to break down the cons for Roomba as the pros are pretty straight forward. You get very clean floors without having to pick up a vaccum. My floors have never looked or felt cleaner and this goes for both the hard wood floors and the area rugs.
Now for the cons (none of which would make me rethink my purchase but I thought it would be informative to those who are still waiting on buying one)
1. Although Roomba does her thing once I hit the clean button, there is still some maintenance that is required. Emptying the dirt bin after each cleaning cycle and keeping the brushes clean have actually been a bit more work that originally described. I have a dog who sheds and the hair gets wrapped around some of the brushes. The tool that is provided in the box to clean the brushes does little to help with this. I find it eaiser to get a pair of scissors and carefully cut the wrapped dog hair off the brushes. For those of you who don't want to get your hands dirty, please keep this in mind!
2. The side brushes break fairly easy. One of the comments I saw in my review is that Irobot now ships some rubber bumpber that helps with this. I haven't looked into getting this yet but I suggest that if you don't have one on yours (like me), be prepared to replace the side brush often. I was able to get a free replacement on my first one but haven't gone back for a second yet.
3. The scheduling aspect of Roomba is useless for me. Because I have a 1 year old who has every toy in the history of toys, I find I need to do a complete sweep of the rooms before Roomba does her thing. If Roomba hits one of these toys, the sensor doesn't always pick up on it and it will try and go over the toy. This usually results in Roomba shutting down until you restart it. Leaving it on schedule means I need to clean up before it goes off. Its just easier for me to set it off manually when I want it to clean.
4. Noise - While quiter than a vaccum, Roomba can still be rather loud. Unless your house is very large, expect the noise to create a bothersome sound if you are watching TV on the same floor or if you are trying to sleep. You will hear it.
5. Auto Docking - Can't seem to figure this one out. Half the time Roomba docks itself with no problem. The other half it wanders around aimlessly with the docking light blinking just a few feet from the station yet it completely ignores it. I've cleaned the sensors and it still does it. I guess it just has a mind of its own sometimes.
6. One minor cleaning issue - Roomba will sometimes leave a big dust ball on the edge of an area rug when it is transitioning from a hard wood floor to the rug. It appears that the dust ball is wrapped around the brushes at one point but gets pulled off by the edge of the rug when it takes that tiny little step up from the floor. If Roomba goes back over that area, great! dust ball gone. If not, your stuck with a dust ball that you have to pick up (again, for me not a big deal but for those that don't want to get their hands dirty....)
None of these complaints or even the sum of them all give me enough reason to question my purchase. Since 95% of the dirt is removed including under furniture (which frankly, I never cleaned prior to Roomba!) these minor issues really don't amount to much in my opinion. Yes, it can be rather disgusting to clean the brushes when they get clogged and I need to make sure all toys are off the floor but that all translates into a very clean house! Keeps the wife happy!!
I'll check comments...Read more›

With dramatically improved navigation, cleaning coverage, vacuum pickup, and particle filtration, the Roomba 560 vacuuming robot picks up amazing amounts of dirt and debris with the simple touch of a button. The powerful unit features innovative spinning side brushes that grab dirt and dust from corners and along wall edges, as well as two high-speed, counter-rotating brushes that pick up pet hair, cat litter, food crumbs, and other debris from floors. The vacuum sucks up the debris and deposits it into a large, easy-to-empty, bagless dust bin, and its improved fine-filtration system traps dust, pollen, and other allergens inside the unit, reducing infiltration into the living environment.
For added convenience, the vacuum's cleaning head automatically adjusts to transition from wood, tile, and linoleum to carpets and rugs, while improved anti-tangle technology ensures it will not get stuck on cords and rug fringe. If the unit begins to pick up a cord or carpet tassel, it will automatically reverse the direction of its brushes to extract the item. A gentle-touch bumper system senses obstacles so the vacuum automatically slows its approach, gently touches the obstacle, then redirects to continue cleaning under or around the object. Because it cleans under beds, couches, and other hard-to-reach areas, it actually vacuums more of the floor than a standard upright. The vacuum also senses dirtier areas and spends more time cleaning them, and it uses built-in cliff sensors to avoid stairs and other drop-offs. In addition, invisible barriers can be set using the 2 auto virtual walls included in the system. To mark off-limit areas, simply place a virtual wall at a doorway or other opening and adjust the infrared beam setting to the distance of the opening. The unit automatically detects the beam and will not cross it.
The vacuuming robot returns to its self-charging Home Base to dock and recharge between cleaning cycles or when the battery starts to run low. Its advanced power system consists of a fast-charging battery, a three-hour charger, and a power source that supercharges the unit for up to 120 minutes of continuous cleaning, covering about three to four average-size rooms on a single charge. Other accessories include two Auto Virtual Walls, a brush cleaning tool, and an extra filter. The vacuuming robot measures 16-3/4 by 21 by 5 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Black & Decker FHV1200 Flex Vac Cordless Ultra-Compact Vacuum Cleaner Review

Black and Decker FHV1200 Flex Vac Cordless Ultra-Compact Vacuum Cleaner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I thought maybe potential purchasers would like to know that the FHV1200 Flex Vac runs for a little over seven minutes continuously before the motor starts to slow down and lose power. (Never run a NiCd powered product completely dead, some of the battery cells will "reverse" and be permanently damaged.) The time to fully recharge after running the vac this long is about 20 hours (figure a full day to keep it simple). The charger is a small wall adapter type.
I think the power is very good for a rechargeable vacuum (a little more than your average "dustbuster"). As an example, it will easily suck up cat litter, small pebbles, and potting soil, but will have trouble sucking up a glass marbles or pennies.
I don't think mine is too loud. It has that high speed "whine" sound combined with the sound of rushing air, but the combination is somewhat muffled. It definitely doesn't sound weak. It almost sounds like a corded vac.
The FHV1200 smaller than you might expect, and the build quality is very good. I'm not normally fond of Black and Decker, but I like this little machine. ...and the blue LED charge light is cool!
Minus one star because it takes a looooong time to recharge...

Combining the convenience of a handheld with the versatility of a full-size vacuum, this ultra-compact, cordless cleaner makes it easy to breeze through household chores--without the need to plug in, change outlets, or lug around a heavy upright. The unit's patented, high-performance motor supplies 40-percent more suction power (when compared to a 12V Dustbuster), and its cyclonic action spins dirt away from the filter to help ensure long-lasting suction power--it even comes with a "filter refresh" knob that flicks debris off the filter as needed to further improve suction power. The vacuum cleaner offers a generous, integrated handle for comfortable transport from room to room, plus a 4-foot flexible hose for extended reach back into corners, up to high shelves, or to other hard-to-clean areas around the home or in the car. Three handy attachments come included: use the long crevice tool to clean between couch cushions or other tight spots; the two-in-one nozzle/brush tool to dust drapes, blinds, and bookshelves or to pick up spilled cereal on the kitchen floor; and the pet-hair cleaning tool to loosen hair and ground-in dirt and debris from stairs, upholstery, and other surfaces. The vacuum also provides a three-stage filtration system for clean air exhaust, a stable base, wrap around hose storage, and an easy-empty 17-ounce dirt canister for quick cleanup. Accessories include a dishwasher-safe filter (model FVF100), a charger, and a storage caddy to keep the attachments neatly contained and easily accessible. Best of all, the vacuum cleaner has earned an Energy Star rating, which means it meets strict energy-efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy. Energy Star products can help save up to a third on energy bills, as well as greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, all of which means a cleaner, more welcoming home without excess costs or impact on the environment. The innovative, sleek-looking vacuum cleaner measures approximately 12-1/5 by 6-2/5 by 10 inches and carries a full two-year warranty.

I underwent a long and arduous search for the best vacuum, and I finally found it. I read a ton of reviews and looked at lots of models, and am very happy with my choice. However, we've only had it for a few weeks, so perhaps I'll find fault later on, but for now, my husband and I are both thrilled with this vac. It's light, easy to maneuver and great on our hardwood floors and rugs. Even though there is no brush roller, it still works well on all our rugs, which are mostly orientals and some with a fairly thick pile. One caveat: Make sure you use the switch on the vac head to go from hardwood to carpet, or else it will make that terrible scraping sound another reviewer wrote about. Once you hit the switch it works fine, so I guess that person just didn't notice the switch. It's nice and quiet and also works well on cat hair. The only criticism I have is that the vent blower on top of the vac can blow dust a bit but that's only when you are holding it at odd angles, like on the stairs. Once I was aware of that, I was able to turn it to avoid the issue. The cord was long enough for me; didn't have that issue as others have. I love that it has a holder to keep the wand upright when you need to stop and move something-- you don't have to find something to lean it on. Overall, I'm VERY pleased!!!
NOTE: Amazon lists a suggestion to buy vac bags at the same time, but it listed the wrong kind of bag. This machine takes G/N bags and not the other kind as was listed.

A table fan that quietly and effectively cools an entire room without any blades? Introducing the GSI Air Multiplier, which works differently from conventional fans. The Air Multiplier uses an airfoil-shaped ramp to amplify the airflow 15 to 18 times to create a cool blast of smooth air without the unpleasant buffeting caused by spinning blades. The energy-efficient motor draws in more than 5 gallons of air per second using the same technologies used in jet engines. The air passes over the airfoil-shaped ramp, which channels its direction. Air behind and around the machine is also drawn into the airflow, amplifying it at least 15 times for a quiet, cool breeze that will let you relax. With no blades or grille to get in the way, the Air Multiplier is safe around kids and pets, and it's easy to clean too. The touch-tilt feature pivots on its own center of gravity, letting it stay put without clamping.

Dyson DC17 Total Clean Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaner Review

Dyson DC17 Total Clean Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ever since I starting hearing the hype from Dyson about their vacuums i've been skeptical. From an industrial design stand point they are works of art, however, the intended functionality remained in question. I've owned Hoover, Dirt Devil, Rainbow and Kirby. The Rainbow was the vacuum we had growing up and the water filtration really seemed to make sense. My stint with Kirby was a 30 day in home trial. The vacuum was amazing but I decided to save the $1800 I paid and buy something much less expensive (sub $100 believe it or not). That sub $100 vac was a Dirt Devil bag-less that frustrated me every time I used it. This time around I wanted to pay a little more for a good solid cleaning machine and after 3 weeks of research I narrowed by search to the following:
- Kirby
- Oreck
- Dyson
- Electrolux
After another week of research I narrowed it to Oreck and Dyson. Oreck has a really cool program where you pay for 25% of the vacuum up front and then make monthly payments no interest for 11 months on the balance. This makes it easy to pay for a more expensive vac over time. I was leaning toward the Oreck DutchTech 1400B canister vac. Oreck's top of the line. The total cost of the vac shipped was about $970.00. I had the vac in my shopping cart about 2 or 3 times over the course of a couple days but could never quite hit the purchase button. The main reason being I wasn't quite sure about pulling around a canister vac, the second was the price. I had seen refurbished Dyson's on [...] for $209 in the past and that was less than just the initial payment alone on the Oreck, not to mention another 11 months of about $70 per month...so I held off. Another week passed and I noticed [...] had a refurbished Dyson DC17 platinum blue for $237.00 shipped. I had researched this vac extensively and knew it had Dyson's newest Level 3 Root Cyclone technology for the purest separation and filtration of particles of all the Dyson vacs. I snatched it up figuring a $500.00 vac should be worth the purchase at less than half price. 3 days later the Dyson arrived. Keep in mind that I have a house cleaner that comes every 2 weeks and cleans the house top to bottom so my place isn't dirty, the carpets are well kept and it's neat etc. The Dyson immediately had a field day with the carpets sucking up so much stuff that I had to wonder, did my old vacuum do anything at all??? The Dirt Devil was immediately tossed in the trash. The Dyson sucked up so much stuff it made me sick to look at it! Every aspect of this machine is truly everything that Dyson claims it to be. Zero suction loss, extremely well built, very smooth sounding motor, extremely high speed brush roll, no non-sense, easy to use operation, ingeniously designed attachments and tools, simple, smart operation and enough suction to pull your carpets from the floor boards! The Kirby was an amazing machine from two standpoints. Suction and construction. If I were in a vacuum demolition derby i'd take the Kirby any day of the week, it's all steel and built like a tank. As far as suction goes, the two are as equal as you can measure without scientific equipment. My Dyson actually fell down about 8 stairs tonight as I was vacuuming the stairs and not one part broke, it kept on sucking so it's not brittle or prone to breakage under normal conditions. One thing I never liked about ANY of the vacuums i've owned is the smell you get when using them. They all just have that yucky dusty vacuum smell. The Dyson claims that stated the air the Dyson outputs is cleaner than the air it took in always seemed ludicrous to me. How could that be? I'm finally a believer. I'm not sure if it's the filter in the Dyson or if there's some sort of smell pack in there? If there is it's certainly not stated, but the air the Dyson outputs smells very good and is just....I guess fresh. It's hard to explain but it does seem to eliminate any odors that may have been in the air before vacuuming. It's pretty amazing...my best guess is that it does filter the air to be cleaner than it was before it got sucked it. Absolutely amazing.
One thing I have to mention is the Dyson mini turbine head. I purchased this separately. It retails at most places for $69.99 but I got it at Fry's for $49.99. I was VERY skeptical about this and figured i'd be returning it the next day. If you've ever used a non powered brush roll (suction powered) you know that most of them stop the moment they touch carpet or anything for that matter. There is simply no torque to turn the brushes. Even my Kirby had an air powered attachment that spun brushes that weren't good for anything. I couldn't fathom how the Dyson could be any different but I figured i'd give it a shot. I thought well, as the company slogan goes, maybe Dyson is different? One word. Unbelievable!!! The Dyson mini turbine head is nothing sort of a remarkable piece of engineering. There is a tiny turbine that spins insanely fast from the suction and it must be geared just right. Honestly, the brush roll is actually hard to stop and it keeps spinning as it brushes the carpet. It is possible to stop with your hand but not without some very firm pressure. Even then once stopped, you can feel the torque attempting to spin the brush roll. If you were blindfolded you'd swear it was electric motor powered...it's honestly THAT GOOD. Combined with the pull out handle that extends into a full 3' cleaning wand with 17' hose coil, the upright now essentially becomes a canister vac and you no longer have to bend down at all to clean stairs or vacuum a small patch of carpet or hard to reach areas. The ergonomics and usability are world class.
If I knew long ago what I know about owning a Dyson now, I would have paid full price for the machine ($500) and felt like I was getting a good deal. This vacuum is worth $1000...$2000 dollars. It's simply an amazing cleaning machine that definitely needs to be classed up there with the Oreck and Kirby ultimate cleaning machines of the world. Way to go Dyson, you've made a customer for life.
