While most of my Dyson vacuum can be taken apart and washed with water and soap, there are bits that can't quite be disassembled in such a manner, and over the years, they've started to collect their own... special... odors. While vacuuming a nice section of carpet with some carpet-fresh type material on it would make the exhaust smell good for a while, it wouldn't last.
I purchased these Fresh Wave Vacuum Pearls on a whim - mostly after reading the good reviews about their other gel products. I will say that after a good two months of using this product, they do work as advertised. The pearls absorb some of the built up odor in the vacuum as well as releasing a light scent of its own. The scent is not heavy, so those with sensitive noses shouldn't have to worry too much. I would describe the smell as "piney" - sort of like Pine-Sol, but not nearly as pungent.
The pearls aren't super strong, so if you've got strong mildew or some other intense smell hanging around your vacuum, this will make it better, but probably won't mask or resolve the problem entirely. I've also taken to putting in a cap full of the pearls into my kitchen garbage - they do a pretty good job of keeping the garbage can smelling neutral for an extra day or so.
